HistoriCity: Preservation or Revitalization Planning Tools?

Abstract

The paper addresses the challenges of balancing heritage preservation with the revitalization of historic centres. While these areas play a dual role as memorial testimonies and as drivers of cultural, social, and economic dynamics, they are often constrained by overly general heritage policies. The authors argue for policies and planning tools that both safeguard historic values and adapt to present and future needs, through creative and integrated strategic management. Reflecting on shifting concepts of heritage and international frameworks, the paper highlights the need for context-specific approaches that respect the unique characteristics of each urban fabric while ensuring their role in contemporary urban cohesion and development.
