| dc.description.abstract | Through two urban renewal case studies in Hong Kong and Taipei, this paper develops a conceptual schema—“social engineers, smugglers, experts and critical experts”—to differentiate the roles of system-maintaining and system-transforming intellectuals in the production of space. It examines how intellectuals within and outside government influence planning processes, challenge dominant redevelopment logics centred on exchange value, and help re-problematize urban renewal through attention to lived space, use values and community practices. The paper highlights the importance of critical intellectual engagement in transforming hegemonic, top-down planning approaches in Asian cities. | |
