Abstract

This study explores the interrelations among socio-ecological resilience, identity construction, and hydraulic heritage through a case study of the Xiangyang Irrigation System in Huaibei, China. Tracing the system’s transformation from a functional irrigation network to a fragmented cultural landscape, the research employs oral history, ethnographic observation, and semi-structured interviews to assess local perceptions. Findings reveal divergent community narratives shaped by varying levels of engagement and benefit. While some residents derive identity from the system’s historical and cultural significance, others remain indifferent. The study concludes that hydraulic heritage contributes both to socio-ecological recovery and community identity, positioning it as a vital asset for sustainable regional development.
