The text redefines the concept of the monument within metropolitan conservation, shifting from a static object to an active, antifragile device that generates values and behaviours over time. Conservation becomes a dynamic design process aligned with societal sustainability and evolving heritage, rather than mere material preservation. At the metropolitan scale, cities are seen as living monuments—relational infrastructures fostering cultural continuity and innovation. They catalyse social and environmental transformation, translating local knowledge into adaptive strategies. Case studies introduce the idea of eco-centrality as a node of territorial resilience, where new forms of living, producing, and governing emerge. These places integrate sustainability, spatial justice, and care for the commons, offering a forward-looking model of urban development rooted in cultural vitality and collective agency.
