This study through the Semantic Differential scales explores how spatial planning and design influence perceptions of psychiatric hospitals in Taiwan. Preliminary findings of the study show that hospitals situated within vibrant urban environments and possessing indistinct spatial boundaries are perceived as less ‘lifeless’ or ‘dark’. Moreover, if the residents near the hospital with accurate knowledge of hospital departments and the patient the hospital services report lower levels of negativity. These results underscore the significance of environmental stimuli and cognitive familiarity in shaping public attitudes, suggesting that integrated spatial planning and enhanced transparency may mitigate stigma and facilitate community acceptance of psychiatric facilities.
