Abstract

Creating vibrant urban spaces is key for urban renewal. Emotional attachment is also a vital feature of urban vitality. This study quantifies the emotional attachment between people and the built environment as an evaluation index of the dynamic space of small-scale cities. Based on the theory of emotional attachment, an index system was constructed and applied to the five dynamic urban renewal complexes in Beijing and Shanghai. SPSS was used for data analysis, and an improved TOPSIS model combining entropy weight and grey relational analysis for evaluation. Results show the built environment can enhance urban vitality through emotional attachment. Material characteristics deepen emotional experiences, while non - material ones dynamically influence vitality. The study expands the quantitative framework for urban vitality research and offers methodological references for urban space renewal and design.
