Abstract

This paper examines the spatial dynamics of wheat production in Egypt’s Nile River Delta, a region vital to national food security yet increasingly threatened by urban expansion and ecological degradation. In response to rising import dependency, the Egyptian government has launched large-scale infrastructural initiatives such as the New Delta project and the world’s largest wastewater treatment facility. Using a Delta Urbanism and agroecological planning framework, this study employs layered spatial mapping to analyse land use, irrigation infrastructure, transport networks, and settlement patterns. Findings highlight the limitations of techno-centric desert reclamation strategies and the vulnerabilities of smallholder-based systems. The study advocates for spatially integrated and ecologically adaptive planning approaches, the reintegration of agriculture into urban peripheries and the reconfiguration of food, water, and land systems in deltaic territories.
