Abstract

The paper examines how deindustrialised urban areas can be transformed through post-growth planning approaches that prioritise ecological sustainability, social equity, and local resilience. Using the French case studies of Ile-de-Nantes in Nantes and Docks-de-Seine in Saint-Ouen, the research critically analyses redevelopment strategies implemented in former industrial sites. The study explores the role of sustainable neighbourhoods, industrial heritage preservation, participatory planning, environmental restoration, and locally grounded economic development in addressing the challenges of deindustrialisation. Based on field research, document analysis, and interviews with local stakeholders, the paper argues that successful regeneration requires balancing environmental objectives with social inclusion, preventing gentrification, and integrating local communities into decision-making processes. The findings highlight the importance of post-growth policies that build upon local resources, cultural heritage, and ecological restoration while fostering economic opportunities compatible with long-term sustainability.
