| dc.description.abstract | This paper investigates the transformative potential of urban planning by presenting the process through which a comprehensive Views and Vistas Analysis for Valletta World Heritage City was drawn up. The theoretical background is presented through key themes related to Urban Cultures and Lived Heritage. We explore how space is a relational concept and present a critical understanding of the changing gaze in its regard to the city. The methodology for the analysis is then presented, this based on identifying key visual elements within the city, assessing their aesthetic and symbolic importance, determining optimal viewing positions and analysing the visual composition of the views. The analysis resulted in a set of key principles for good governance in the interpretation and application of Maltese spatial planning policy. | |
