Actions to improve soundscape in the “Plaza Nueva” in Bilbao

Abstract

This paper explores strategies to enhance the soundscape of Plaza Nueva, a historic square in Bilbao, Spain, known for its social and leisure activities. As part of the municipality’s renewal strategy for the historic district, the study integrates the sound dimension as a parameter in urban design. The methodology combines acoustic measurements with psychosocial assessments through questionnaires, alongside an analysis of architectural elements influencing the sound environment. The findings identify urban features that can enhance the sensory quality of public spaces and inform potential interventions to balance leisure activities with a more comfortable environmental experience.
