This paper explores the challenges and opportunities of designing urban spaces in high-density contexts, with a particular focus on Singapore. As density increases, public space becomes a scarce and valuable resource requiring new design strategies. The study develops a conceptual framework combining design, use, and operational aspects—termed hardware, software, and orgware—to classify, evaluate, and speculate on hybrid urban space typologies. Using 48 case studies from Singapore and other global cities (Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Osaka, New York), the research applies structured observational methods, mapping, and interviews. The analysis highlights critical performance attributes across spatial configurations and proposes design measures to enhance environmental, social, and operational value. The paper concludes that urban space design, when reconceptualised, can play a transformative role in shaping sustainable futures for high-density cities.
