Path Dependence and New Technological Path Creation in the Danish Wind Power Industry

Abstract

This paper argues that canonical theories of path dependence do not adequately explain how new technological pathways are intentionally created. To address this limitation, it proposes a hybrid socio-economic theory that integrates evolutionary economic perspectives with sociological approaches emphasising the role of knowledgeable agents. The paper examines how inventors, innovators and diffusion agents contribute to new path creation under conditions of historical path dependence. The argument is illustrated through a detailed historical analysis of the development of the wind power industry in Denmark, showing how new technological pathways emerged through incremental innovation, niche formation and institutional support rather than through radical path-breaking events.
