Addressing complex planning problems requires being able to respond to a diverse spectrum of perceptions and ideas. However, capturing nuanced perspectives to develop transformative actions remains difficult in research and planning processes. This paper explores Q-methodology as a tool to analyse ideological dimensions in planning problems. By combining qualitative and quantitative analytical techniques, Q-methodology is a useful tool for studying subjectivity, revealing consensus and divergence among perspectives. Here, I reflect on five diverse applications of Q-methodology—to inform or analyse stormwater and flood risk policy, ease water conflict tensions, and assess co-creation’s role in shifting perceptions of transdisciplinarity in climate change adaptation. While acknowledging that there are limitations, these studies illustrate the method’s capacity to uncover narratives, foster dialogue, and study transformative processes.
