Industry 5.0 as a Tool for Strenghtening Urban Resilience Against Disaster Risks

Abstract

Each Industrial Revolution throughout history has brought about significant economic, social, and spatial transformations, with cities serving as the primary arenas of these changes. This paper investigates how production paradigms shaped by Industry 5.0 in the 21st century may transform urban metabolic systems and contribute to enhancing urban resilience. Introduced by the European Commission in 2021, Industry 5.0 differs from previous industrial models by prioritizing human-centric, sustainable, and resilient production approaches. In this context, urban forms and metabolic structures aligned with Industry 5.0 are expected to offer new frameworks for developing resilient urban environments, particularly in response to crises such as climate change and natural disasters. Through a comprehensive review of the literature on Industry 5.0, urban resilience, and urban metabolism, this study outlines the fundamental characteristics of an Industry 5.0-oriented urban environment and proposes a conceptual model to guide planning and design practices.
