Abstract
This paper presents findings from a 2009–2010 research project on the future of International Building Exhibitions (IBA) as instruments for urban and regional revitalisation. IBAs are considered a hallmark of German planning culture, combining experimentation, innovation, and participation to address pressing social, economic, and ecological challenges. The study highlights the global reputation of IBA Emscher Park as a model for restructuring processes and identifies IBA-typical features that can inform other urban development formats. By comparing IBAs with similar initiatives across Europe, the research outlines recommendations for future IBAs and discusses their relevance for broader European urban and regional development strategies.
