This paper explores the spatial dynamics of Istanbul’s fashion design sector within the broader framework of cultural and creative industries. Fashion design, like other creative sectors, tends to cluster in areas where specialised labour, suppliers, and support services are accessible, enhancing opportunities for collaboration and innovation. With structural changes in the global economy elevating the role of cultural industries, Istanbul has emerged as Turkey’s main hub for fashion design. The city combines historical expertise in clothing and textile production with its central role in commerce and global networks. Hosting fairs, fashion shows, and educational institutions, Istanbul provides a unique ecosystem where design and production coexist in close proximity. Drawing on interviews with designers and stakeholders, the paper highlights how spatial proximity, local networks, and geographic characteristics contribute to the sector’s growth and underline the city’s irreplaceable role in Turkey’s fashion industry.
