Abstract
This paper introduces the concept of soundscape as the acoustic equivalent of landscape, defined as the acoustic environment as perceived, experienced, or understood by people in context. Current developments in soundscape research highlight its importance for urban planning and design, particularly in relation to sustainable development, health, well-being, and quality of life. Soundscapes contribute to a sense of place and form part of cultural heritage, raising questions about which soundscapes today’s society will transmit to future generations. The paper argues that soundscapes cannot be universally ideal; rather, they should be evaluated according to the activities they enable in specific contexts, such as street life, children’s playgrounds, or tranquil open spaces. Advancing this field requires an interdisciplinary effort and a deeper understanding of the compatibility between sounds and human activities in urban environments.
