Abstract

This paper addresses the lack of methodological guidance in conducting Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) using mixed method research designs. Based on a content analysis of 149 HIAs conducted worldwide between 1999 and 2011, the study identifies common methodological practices and proposes guidelines for integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches. The paper develops a working model for mixed method HIA research design and outlines steps planners can take to strengthen the analytical and policy relevance of future HIA investigations.
