| dc.description.abstract | Bulgaria has established practices in Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), yet the integration of applied health Impact Assessment (HIA) research findings in the practice of urban planning, governance, and development is limited or absent. This study highlights the pressing need for reintroduction of HIA in the Bulgarian spatial planning system and proposes how that can be accomplished without excessive regulatory burden to city authorities, planning and design experts, (re)developers, and citizens. Drawing on local Bulgarian and international research experience with HIA-based urban planning, the present study conducts a comparative analysis of HIA regulations, provides an overview of health related SEA content, recent exposure studies for the 5 biggest cities in Bulgaria, and ultimately attempts to conceptually reframe HIA in the urban development practice. | |
