Abstract

This paper explores the role of artistic practices in rural transformation, regarding their influence on rural gentrification and spatial dynamics in particular. Urladam, an art space located in Urla, is examined as a threshold where rural and urban, public and private, and artistic and communal dimensions intersect. Through a hybrid methodology, including archival review, spatial analysis, mapping, and interviews, the study evaluates Urladam’s architectural setting and public presence. Findings suggest that Urladam operates as a transitional zone where artistic engagement contributes to reconfiguring rural identity. The paper underscores the potential of art spaces in re-shaping inclusive rural development, and question their role in socio-spatial change and inequality. It illustrates how art mediates spatial transition and fosters dialogue between contrasting rural-urban identities.
