The Role of Urban Green Spaces Attributes in Enhancing Leisure Opportunities and Psychological Well-Being Among Older Residents

Abstract

This study investigates how urban green space (UGS) attributes influence leisure opportunities and psychological well-being among older adults in Hong Kong. Using surveys (n=80) and interviews (n=25) conducted in Morse Park and Fung Tak Park, the research applies the Recreationist-Environment Fit (R-E Fit) model to assess the alignment between park features, older users’ needs and psychological well-being. Quantitative findings indicate that accessibility, safety and maintenance significantly contribute to both perceived fit and emotional well-being. Qualitative results further underscore the importance of elderly-friendly facilities, shaded seating, and social functionality. Together, the findings highlight how well-designed UGS can meet both functional and affective needs, supporting active aging in high-density cities.
