Housing as an Approach for the Brownfield Regeneration Know-How Transfer

Abstract

Regeneration of brownfields is increasingly recognised as a key approach in urbanised city centres, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe where housing shortages and suburbanisation have left city cores neglected. Redevelopment of these sites for housing not only improves spatial organisation but also revitalises urban areas socially and economically. Gentrification and the involvement of alternative entrepreneurs are identified as stabilising forces in long-term transformation processes observed across Europe. The paper focuses on housing-led brownfield regeneration, with examples from European cities and a specific case study of Bratislava. It also presents the BROWNTRANS project (2011–2013), supported under the Leonardo da Vinci Lifelong Learning Programme, which disseminates know-how on brownfield redevelopment across multiple professional fields. The project outcomes, including a handbook, aim to enhance skills and knowledge in economic, financial, legal, technological, managerial, social, cultural, and environmental aspects of brownfield regeneration.
