Abstract

This paper analyses the structure and locational dynamics of Istanbul’s jewellery industry, with particular attention to the old city jewellery cluster—one of the oldest and largest industrial districts in the city. Characterised by numerous small-scale artisanal producers and extensive reliance on outworkers, the cluster highlights the significance of place in jewellery making. The study explores how agglomeration in the old city fosters creativity, competitiveness, and sustainability in the sector, while also addressing policy implications in light of emerging threats and opportunities.
