The implementation of the EU’s ambitious goals for ecological transition and climate adaptation calls for a paradigm shift toward systemic, inclusive, and nature-based governance models for managing environmental assets. Recognizing the growing strategic relevance of the interdependence between governance and stewardship, this contribution offers a critical reflection on the implementation and outcomes of several EU-funded projects (LIFE and Interreg) led by the Roma Tre research group in the Agro Pontino. These projects have fostered the development of an innovative, collaborative, and adaptive governance framework that integrates formal regulatory mechanisms with voluntary agreements (Pacts and Environmental Contracts) and community-driven initiatives (Land stewardship agreements). Operating across multiple governance levels, this approach aims to enhance participatory environmental management, strengthen institutional capacity, and support long-term socio-ecological resilience.
